Surah Al-Kausar and the River in Paradise

Narrated by Hazrat Anas bin Malik (RA) that once the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked: “What is Al-Kausar?”
He ﷺ replied:

“It is a river which Allah has granted me”  that is, in Paradise.

According to Ahadith, this river was given exclusively to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Its water will be whiter than milk and sweeter than honey. On the Day of Judgment, the Prophet ﷺ will give water from this river to his Ummah.

This river is a symbol of the eternal blessings of Paradise. It also contains birds whose necks are as long as camels’ necks.
(Jami` at-Tirmidhi: 2542)

This Hadith also teaches us that the benefits of Surah Al-Kausar are not only worldly or spiritual but include the promise of everlasting blessings and Allah’s reward in the Hereafter.

Why Surah Al-Kausar Was Revealed

Surah Al-Kausar was revealed in Makkah when the Prophet ﷺ was going through a very hard time. His enemies mocked him and called him “Abtar” (cut off) because both of his sons had died. They thought his name and mission would end after him.

The meaning of Surah Al-Kausar shows that true success and legacy do not depend on children, but on Allah’s blessings and the truth of His mission. When this Surah was revealed, the Prophet ﷺ smiled and told his companions that Allah had given him glad news of a river in Paradise called Al-Kausar, full of endless blessings. This is one of the Surah Al-Kausar benefits, reminding us to pray and offer sacrifice as a way to turn to Allah in difficult times.

History shows that the Prophet ﷺ’s name and mission are alive everywhere, while those who mocked him are gone. Allah also blessed his family, and millions of Sayyids (descendants of Hazrat Fatimah ﷺ) live today. This proves that his enemies were really the ones who were Abtar.
